A man accused of deliberately starting one of the devastating Spokane-area wildfires is now at the center of a widening criminal investigation after authorities alleged he was responsible for multiple fires across the region.
Investigators have charged 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci with first-degree arson in connection with the Old Trails Fire, one of the major wildfires that tore through Spokane County, Washington. According to court documents, Farinacci allegedly admitted he had planned the wildfire for weeks, selecting weather conditions that would allow the flames to spread rapidly.
Authorities also allege that Farinacci confessed to setting numerous smaller fires earlier this year, prompting investigators to examine whether additional wildfire incidents may be connected to him. Prosecutors say he used a homemade delayed-ignition device before leaving the area where the Old Trails Fire began.
The Old Trails Fire became one of three major wildfires that devastated communities around Spokane, destroying hundreds of homes and other structures, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and burning thousands of acres across eastern Washington. Firefighters continue working to strengthen containment lines while investigators pursue the criminal case.
