A Washington man charged with arson in connection with one of the devastating Spokane-area wildfires allegedly told investigators he had been planning the fire for weeks before setting it.
According to court documents, 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci admitted to detectives that he carefully planned the wildfire by studying weather conditions and waiting for a day with strong winds, low humidity and high temperatures to maximize the fire’s spread. Investigators said he constructed a homemade delayed-ignition device using matches, notebook paper, a cigarette and a rubber band before placing it in a grassy area and leaving the scene.
Authorities allege the fire he started became the Old Trails Fire, one of three major wildfires that have devastated the Spokane region. The fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures, forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate and burned thousands of acres across eastern Washington.
During questioning, investigators said Farinacci described fire as “powerful” and “beautiful” and acknowledged expecting a significant wildfire, although he reportedly said he did not anticipate the destruction reaching its eventual scale. Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree arson, and he is expected to continue court proceedings in Spokane County.
Fire officials continue working to contain the remaining Spokane-area wildfires while investigators determine the causes of the other major fires burning nearby. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert as hot, dry and windy weather continues to create dangerous wildfire conditions across the region.
