A 16-year-old boy has died after being accidentally shot by his teenage cousin, who authorities say was attempting to disassemble a handgun inside a northwest Harris County home.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies initially responded to a shooting at a residence on Dark Cavern Court on June 30, where they found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries on July 10.
Investigators said the victim’s 16-year-old cousin was trying to take apart a handgun when it unexpectedly discharged, striking the victim. Following the investigation, the cousin was charged with manslaughter and booked into the Harris County Juvenile Center.
Because both individuals involved are juveniles, authorities have not publicly released the identity of the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about firearm safety and the risks associated with handling loaded weapons. Law enforcement officials continue to remind gun owners to ensure firearms are unloaded before handling or attempting maintenance and to keep guns securely stored to prevent accidental shootings.
Officials have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
