Premier David Eby said the situation had become particularly serious in the South Okanagan, where the Bald Range wildfire rapidly expanded into the Summerland area and surrounding communities.
The province said the emergency declaration will allow officials to access specific tools and resources needed to respond to the rapidly changing situation.
Thousands Evacuated as Wildfires Spread
More than 20,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes across British Columbia as multiple wildfires threaten communities, according to emergency and news reports.
The Bald Range wildfire has been one of the most significant fires driving the latest evacuations.
The blaze, which began near Faulder west of Summerland, grew rapidly and reached approximately 9,500 hectares. The fire prompted evacuation orders covering the entire District of Summerland as well as affected areas around Peachland and other communities west of Okanagan Lake.
Emergency crews have conducted rescues in areas where rapidly changing fire conditions left some people trapped.
Helicopters have also been used to evacuate residents from areas where roads were difficult or unsafe to use.

The Bald Range wildfire remains a major concern in British Columbia’s South Okanagan region.
The fire spread rapidly as winds intensified, pushing into the Summerland area and affecting surrounding valleys.
Officials have reported significant losses of homes and property in the affected region, although the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The District of Summerland has also experienced major infrastructure disruptions, including power outages and a boil-water notice after untreated water entered the municipal system when the water treatment plant was bypassed during the emergency.
Highway 97 has also been closed in parts of the affected area.
