A powerful explosion sparked a massive five-alarm apartment fire in the Bronx, New York, on Wednesday afternoon, sending more than 300 firefighters and emergency medical personnel to the scene as crews carried out dramatic rescues and battled intense flames.

The incident was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. at a five-story apartment building on East 209th Street. Firefighters arrived within minutes and encountered heavy fire conditions, with flames shooting from multiple windows and evidence of a powerful explosion that caused extensive damage throughout the building.

According to fire officials, the explosion blew out several windows and damaged apartment doors, creating dangerous conditions for firefighters attempting to search for trapped occupants and contain the rapidly spreading blaze. The fire intensified quickly, extending from the second floor to additional levels of the building.

During firefighting operations, part of the structure on the third floor collapsed, forcing crews to temporarily withdraw from the building for their safety. Despite the hazardous conditions, firefighters continued rescue efforts while emergency medical personnel treated injured victims at the scene.

Officials confirmed that 11 people were injured, including seven civilians and four firefighters. Several residents required rescue from the burning building, with emergency crews providing immediate lifesaving treatment before transporting the injured for further medical care. The severity of the injuries has not been fully disclosed.

The fire escalated to a fifth-alarm response, bringing hundreds of firefighters, EMS personnel, and specialized units to assist with suppression efforts and ensure the safety of nearby residents. Crews worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control while monitoring the stability of the damaged structure.

Fire officials said personnel will remain at the scene to watch for hotspots and prevent flare-ups as investigators examine the building. The cause of the explosion and the resulting fire remains under investigation.
