A wildfire has burned through more than 60 hectares of land at Indonesia’s Mount Bromo National Park, prompting authorities to close parts of the popular tourist destination as firefighters continue containment efforts.
The fire began earlier this week and has spread across dry vegetation inside the protected park in East Java. Emergency crews have been working around the clock to prevent the flames from reaching additional areas while monitoring hotspots that remain active.
According to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, firefighters have deployed fire trucks, water tanks and drones to assist with suppression efforts. However, steep terrain and strong winds have made it difficult to fully contain the blaze, increasing the risk of further spread.
Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most visited volcanoes and attracts thousands of domestic and international tourists each year. As a precaution, officials have temporarily closed sections of the national park while firefighting operations continue.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the wildfire, and no casualties have been reported. Investigators are expected to determine the origin of the fire once conditions are safe for a full assessment.
Environmental officials say the dry season has increased wildfire risks across several parts of Indonesia, with prolonged hot weather creating favorable conditions for fires to spread quickly through grasslands and forested areas.
