The Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon, British Columbia, showed reduced fire behaviour Thursday as widespread smoke from other wildfires helped limit the intensity of the blaze.
The wildfire continues to burn northwest of Vernon near Westside Road, where firefighters and structure-protection crews remain focused on protecting homes and other properties from the flames.
According to the latest update, the fire was last mapped at approximately 2,852 hectares. While the smoke helped reduce fire activity, officials continue to treat the situation seriously because conditions can change quickly when winds increase or the smoke clears.
BC Wildfire Service crews are working alongside the Okanagan Indian Band Fire Department, with structure-protection teams continuing to respond around properties along Westside Road. Firefighters have also been working to extinguish remaining hotspots and strengthen protection around threatened areas.
The Bradley Creek wildfire has already caused extensive destruction in the region. Approximately 230 homes have been reported destroyed in the Okanagan Indian Band community, making the fire one of the most destructive wildfires currently burning in British Columbia.
The fire also triggered evacuations and alerts in surrounding communities as residents were forced to leave areas threatened by the rapidly spreading blaze.
Although cooler and smoky conditions have helped slow the fire, officials remain cautious. Changes in wind, temperature and visibility could cause fire behaviour to increase again.
Residents in affected areas are being urged to follow evacuation orders and alerts and to monitor official emergency updates. People should not return to evacuated areas until authorities confirm that it is safe to do so.
Fire crews are expected to continue suppression and structure-protection operations as they work to keep the wildfire from spreading further and protect remaining homes and infrastructure.
