A highly anticipated Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire concert in San Francisco was abruptly postponed Thursday night after a medical emergency involving a member of Earth, Wind & Fire.
The concert was scheduled to take place at Chase Center, with the show due to begin at 7:30 p.m. However, the announcement that the performance could not go ahead was issued only minutes before the scheduled start time, leaving thousands of concertgoers surprised as they waited inside and outside the arena.
Earth, Wind & Fire said the band was unable to perform because of the medical emergency involving one of its members. Neither the band nor the concert organizers identified the person involved or provided details about the individual’s condition.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that emergency personnel responded to Chase Center at around 5:30 p.m. One person was transported to a hospital by private ambulance, although officials did not publicly identify that person or disclose the nature of the medical emergency.
The sudden postponement affected a large crowd at the venue. Chase Center can accommodate nearly 20,000 people for concerts, and attendees were directed to leave after the performance was called off.
Ticket holders have been advised to keep their original tickets, which will be honored when a new date is announced. Fans who cannot attend the rescheduled performance will be able to request refunds through their original point of purchase.
No replacement date had been announced at the time of the latest reports.
The postponement comes several weeks after Lionel Richie experienced his own health scare during the opening night of the same tour in Minnesota. Richie became dizzy during that June performance and subsequently postponed two additional shows before returning to the stage.
The current medical emergency, however, involves a member of Earth, Wind & Fire and is separate from Richie’s earlier health issue.
The concert is part of the “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour featuring Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire. The tour is scheduled to continue with upcoming performances in California, although the status of the remaining dates could become a major point of interest for fans following the San Francisco postponement.
