Firefighters continue making progress against the devastating Spokane Complex Fires in eastern Washington, but thousands of residents remain under evacuation orders as crews work to secure containment lines and eliminate remaining hotspots.
Emergency officials said significant gains have been made around the Old Trails, Autumn Lane and Fairview fires after cooler weather helped slow fire activity. Despite the improved conditions, authorities stressed that evacuation orders remain in effect in several communities because hazardous conditions still exist.
The Spokane Complex Fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures while forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate across Spokane County. Firefighters continue focusing on protecting damaged neighborhoods, extinguishing hotspots and strengthening containment lines before residents can safely return.
Officials warned that returning home too early could place residents at risk due to unstable trees, damaged power infrastructure, hidden hotspots and ongoing firefighting operations. Emergency managers said evacuation levels will only be reduced when crews determine conditions are safe.
More than a thousand firefighters and support personnel remain assigned to the incident, using engines, bulldozers, aircraft and hand crews to increase containment before hotter and drier weather returns later this week.
Authorities continue encouraging residents to monitor official evacuation notices and avoid entering restricted areas until restrictions are lifted. Investigators are also continuing their investigation into the causes of the fires, including the criminal arson case connected to the Old Trails Fire.
